César Baldaccini (1921-1998), known as César, was a French sculptor recognized for his innovative approach to sculpture and his iconic “compressions.” Born in Marseille, France, César rose to prominence in the 1960s as a leading figure in the Nouveau Réalisme movement.
César’s compressions, created from crushed automobiles and other discarded metal objects, challenged traditional notions of sculpture and explored themes of consumerism and industrialization.
