François Pompon (1855-1933) was a French sculptor known for his elegant animal sculptures characterized by simplicity and grace. Born in Burgundy, France, Pompon initially trained as a stonemason before pursuing formal sculpture studies in Paris.

Pompon gained widespread recognition for his masterpiece, “Ours blanc” (White Bear), unveiled at the Salon d’Automne in 1922. This sculpture, with its sleek lines and smooth surfaces, marked a departure from traditional naturalism, showcasing Pompon’s minimalist style and artistic vision. The White Bear captivated audiences and solidified Pompon’s reputation as a pioneering sculptor.

In a unique artistic homage, the estate of Yves Klein revisited Pompon’s White Bear, creating a reinterpretation of the sculpture in a striking blue hue. This artistic reinterpretation pays homage to Pompon’s original creation while also showcasing Klein’s innovative use of color.

Today, Pompon’s sculptures continue to inspire admiration for their timeless beauty and universal appeal, cementing his legacy as a master sculptor whose work resonates across generations.
