Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) was a Chinese-French painter known for his abstract and lyrical style. Born in Beijing, China, Zao moved to Paris in 1948 and became associated with the École de Paris. He is celebrated for his ability to blend Eastern and Western artistic traditions, incorporating elements of Chinese calligraphy with abstract expressionism.

Zao’s paintings are characterized by their vibrant colors, fluid brushwork, and dynamic compositions, which evoke a sense of movement and emotion. He often drew inspiration from nature, particularly landscapes and the elements, creating works that are both meditative and powerful.

Throughout his career, Zao received numerous awards and accolades, including the Grand Prize for Painting at the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1961. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important Chinese artists of the 20th century.
