Lev Kropivnitsky (1913-1994) was a Russian painter known for his contributions to Soviet Realism as well as his participation in the non-conformist art movement. Born in Kyiv, Kropivnitsky studied at the Kyiv Art Institute and later became a member of the Ukrainian Union of Artists. In addition to his more traditional works depicting scenes of everyday life in the Soviet Union, Kropivnitsky also explored abstractionism and participated in the creation of non-conformist art during a time when such expressions were not officially recognized by the Soviet regime. His abstract paintings, characterized by bold colors and dynamic compositions, showcased his versatility and willingness to challenge artistic conventions. Despite the risks involved, Kropivnitsky’s commitment to artistic freedom and experimentation left a lasting impact on the Ukrainian art scene.
